So, after being a member of deviant for a month, I've become irritatingly aware of something. Deviant is full of angst and attention-craving teenagers. I just want to grab these kids by the ears and say: ' suck it up. you don't have any more problems then 80% of kids your age.' but instead I fall into the trap of crappy poetry and prose and angsty photos and photo-manipulation. This shit isn't art. This shit is barely a quivering comment on society or teen issues or anything. It's fine if you want to be angsty, angst is a normal part of being a teenager. But PLEASE REALIZE THAT THERE ARE MORE IMPORTANT THINGS OUT THERE THAN YOU. you have to be able to draw the line between 'petty hormonal-induced problems' and a major life crisis. I just find all of these journal entries or 'i cut myself and i have an eating disorder' poems the most self-centered and transparent pieces I've ever seen. I'm not saying that eating disorders or self-harm or any other thing like that is self-centered and i'm not trying to denegrate these issues. What i'm saying is that theres a difference between a 14 and a half year old girl who says she's bulimic and a pale-skinned 15 year old who weighs less than she did 7 years ago. I just feel that most of these 'works of art' are less about creating anything of substance and more about 'look at me, i'm a suffering teenager, i need some attention.'
If you actually have real problems you should get help or not say anything to anybody. That's how the genuinely-troubled youth do it.
And one more thing. If you're going to put something up on deviant you should be able to handle the ACTUAL criticism. I feel like deviant is being used by so many people to solely up their self-esteem and not to gain actual criticism. CRITICISM GUYS...IS NOT ALWAYS POSTIVE and if you can't handle somebody telling you they don't like your work or you should change something, thats probably the first sign you're on here for the wrong reasons.
